Pay It Forward: How Random Acts of Kindness Can Change the World
You’ve probably seen the movie Pay It Forward (has it really been 11 years since it came out?). You’ve likely encountered at least one of Liberty Mutual’s fantastic “Humans of Progress” commercials that celebrate everyday kindness. If not, you should check them out—they’re guaranteed to brighten your day.
Can Small Acts of Kindness Really Make a Difference?
Those commercials create feel-good moments that make you feel all warm and fuzzy. But do they represent things that really change the world? Can one random act of kindness truly make a difference?
What about 85 random acts of kindness?
My idealistic self says YES!
SEP’s Community Involvement Program Launches
In celebration of a month of thankfulness this November, SEP just rolled out our new Community Involvement Program. As part of this initiative, we’ve launched our Pay-It-Forward program, which gives our employees a chance to share some of the blessings we have. This is us putting our money where our mouth is when we say part of our mission is to “make the world a better place.”
Ideas for Spreading Kindness
I can’t wait to hear what happens. I’ve already heard some awesome ideas from our team:
- Buying a stranger a cup of coffee
- Purchasing a meal for a homeless person downtown
- Taking a dozen cupcakes to a new neighbor
I have grand visions of watching the news one night and hearing, “Up next at 11…a sudden outbreak of random acts of kindness is being reported throughout Indiana. What is behind this movement? Channel 13 investigates.” A girl can dream, right?
Join the Conversation
We want to hear from you:
- Has a stranger’s kindness ever turned your day around?
- Have you ever witnessed something that inspired you (like in those commercials)?
- Have you ever had a moment where you paid it forward?
- If you had 10 bucks to share today, what would you do with it?
Be the Change
By the way, if you find yourself behind a car dropping off donuts and coffee to those hardworking construction crews on 146th Street one day next week, don’t be irritated because you had to slow down. Be inspired. Go share some cheer.
