Opportunity
Legacy Systems Threatened Safety and Readiness
Modern aircraft engines are complex—and when something goes wrong, the cost is measured in lives, trust, and lost time, not just dollars. Every flight depends on maintenance crews having the right information at the right moment. Ground station software is their lifeline: it monitors engine health and flags issues that could threaten safety or cause delays.
But the tools our client’s teams relied on were decades old. Crews had to work around outdated technology that made it harder to spot problems in time. That meant more pressure, more risk of grounded planes, and less confidence that missions would stay on schedule. With fleets flying in more than 100 countries and partnerships across both civil aviation and defense, the stakes were personal as well as operational.
Our client needed modern, dependable ground station tools so their people could
- make faster decisions,
- prevent failures, and
- keep passengers, crews, and missions safe worldwide.

Solution
Modernizing Ground Stations for Global Flight Readiness
Over the course of 25+ years, SEP has partnered with our client across ten different engine programs—nearly half of their portfolio. Each phase of work has been shaped by one clear goal: equip maintenance teams with dependable, modern tools to keep fleets safe, efficient, and ready to fly.
Early Modernization
We began by converting legacy ground station desktop applications to a secure C++ and C# architecture. This gave the client a stable, scalable foundation to extend functionality and improve usability for maintenance crews worldwide.

Evolving Diagnostics
As engines became more advanced, we added new diagnostic capabilities. Ground stations were updated to connect with aircraft flight recorders, allowing technicians to quickly pull and analyze performance data after each flight. Over time, these tools became essential for spotting issues early and planning maintenance before problems disrupted operations.
First Prognostics Software
As the partnership grew, our work moved beyond diagnostics into prediction. SEP helped the client build their first prognostic tools—software that warned crews about potential issues before they happened. For maintenance teams, this meant fewer last-minute surprises and more time to plan repairs.
This shift from reactive troubleshooting to predictive insights reduced costly surprises and increased fleet readiness across commercial and defense aviation.

Compliance and Testing
In aerospace, every software release must meet rigorous FAA and DOD requirements. To ease that burden, SEP built a local testbed and handled software verification in support of DO-178B Level D (airborne software) and DO-278A (ground-based CNS/ATM software).
This approach kept the client compliant while freeing their teams to focus on critical work. It also helped them maintain safety certifications without delaying delivery.
“The SEP team knows our system inside and out. They’re the experts we rely on, and the feedback they provide has been invaluable.”
Trusted Partnership
Beyond code, SEP managed the entire software development lifecycle and safeguarded export-controlled data. Over decades, we became a strategic partner—not just a vendor—trusted to steward mission-critical software that supports global flight operations.
