A Modern Approach to Software Product Management

Overview

A modern product management approach helps align competing interests and perspectives throughout the product development lifecycle. This is especially important to “building the right thing” and “building the thing right.” Today’s best tech companies have adopted a product- and user-centric philosophy. They bring together different sources of insights to build world-class products. They test, experiment, measure, and learn faster than their competition. The product manager has emerged as a critical role in these companies.

Organizations across many industries are going through some form of digital transformation.  In this ever-changing landscape, a modern approach to product management is often needed to align leadership, engineering, design, and delivery. Most organizations still try to optimize for efficiency, building functional silos that don’t collaborate (or even talk much!).  Successful companies are shifting from traditional product management structures into one focused on clear priorities, learning, and integration of multi-disciplined teams.

SEP has helped clients adopt this mindset shift.  This session discussed how this approach connected familiar concepts and tools like Agile, Lean, Lean Startup, design thinking, discovery, delivery, OKRs, continuous delivery, and more. Participants saw how using this framework could improve their approach to managing products and left with a fresh perspective on software product management.
