Introducing the Product Roadmap Wall
Overview
Most organizations still rely on some form of a roadmap, but traditional roadmaps often fail to meet the needs of modern product delivery teams. A good roadmap supports agile practices such as daily standups and planning, creates high visibility and transparency, operates with low overhead, and provides the right information to the right people at the right time.
In this session, Chris shared how he implemented a Roadmap Wall—a highly visible, actionable format that incorporates key roadmap components. The Roadmap Wall provided multiple benefits, including:
- Giving leadership and executives visibility into how their decisions influenced features, story backlogs, and priorities
- Helping delivery teams understand technical feasibility and trade-offs
- Offering options for satisfying competing customer needs
- Demonstrating a clear picture of how business objectives linked to customer needs
To realize these benefits, Chris leveraged a variety of familiar tools. He demonstrated how to use a Kanban system to manage business objectives and OKRs, utilize priority queues, and incorporate WIP limits. He showed how an opportunity canvas and opportunity solution tree clarified customer needs, and introduced new ways to use story maps when detailing features, improving communication and planning.
By the end of the session, participants walked away with a new method for visualizing their product roadmap, empowering their teams to make better, more informed decisions.
