Product Thinking and Architecture – Aligning and Growing Technology with the Product Needs of the Business
Overview
When you have an existing product, making modifications can be difficult, especially when teams are interdependent. We’ve learned that more planning doesn’t always make it easier to make changes, and this difficulty is fundamentally an architectural problem.
The question then becomes: how do you design and adapt an architecture that intentionally accommodates the evolving product needs of your business?
In this session, we looked at three techniques for product team success:
- Aligning and evolving product needs at a macro / cross-team level
- Aligning and evolving product needs at the team level
- Capturing assumptions and decisions in an intentional way
We demonstrated how to align business context with architecture using Strategic Domain Driven Design, a method that led to easier development and testing for teams. We explored how to reduce cross-team dependencies and socialize internal design using C4 modeling, along with a simple technique for understanding how to apply types of tests. We also showed how to document both product and architectural assumptions in a dynamic and context-rich way, along with their impacts. Finally, we discussed how to ensure product needs continued to align with architecture as the product grew—across different markets, geolocations, and offerings.
The session closed with strategies on how to roll this out in organizations, helping teams overcome architectural bottlenecks, enhance collaboration, and future-proof their products.
